What is sand blasting?
Abrasive blasting which is also commonly referred to as sand blasting machine is a process in which a tool is used to smoothen out or polish a rugged surface. Rust and corrosion are general problems and normally sand blasting is a fast and efficient solution to rebuilding machinery, vessels, and metal parts back to their former condition and looking their best. Abrasive blasting can also be used to repair surfaces that may require repainting.
Sand blasting is a process where an abrasive element, identified as a medium, is chosen to blast into a facade to replace its smoothness or remove contaminants. The quantity of pressure will decide how long the process will take and the quality of results.
The term “sand blasting” was used basically, as when the method began in the past, sand was the only factor remaining used. These days other types of factors are now being used, depending on the surface, the type of metal, and the job being offered.
Different types of sandblasting abrasive mediums that can be used:
Silica Sand or Silicon Dioxide Blasting :
Silicon Dioxide refers to common sand, which is also known as silica or quartz. Silica Sand blasting was an ordinarily used process that is used for removing impurities from surfaces; because the sand particles are almost the same size and the edges of the particles are sharp, hence making this type of sand useful in abrasive blasting.
Glass Bead Blasting :
For a matte and silky finish glass bead sand blasting can be used. This medium has very fine elements that smooth the surface of the object doing sandblasted. This type of abrasive blasting is normally used on blasting cabinets.
Steel Grit Blasting :
In this process, steel grit is generally used as an abrasive in the removal of rust and paint from steel metals. The use of steel leaves a smooth finish. Steel grit is can usually be preferred due to its fast cutting nature.
Bristle Blasting :
In this type of abrasive blasting, it is no separate tool is used. Instead, steel wire bristles are applied on a surface. This rotating movement aids in the removal of dirt, hence leaving the outside smooth. This process is usually used to clean metal exteriors with some form of corrosion.
Soda Blasting :
Soda sand blasting relates to the use of baking soda or bicarbonate of soda in the blasting process. Soda is used as an abrasive to eliminate rust from metals without causing trouble or damaging the metal below the rough surface. Soda is also great sand to use on fine materials that may be destroyed by tougher abrasives.
