Axial Flow Fan

The axial flow fan is a type of fan in which gas flow through in an axial direction and parallel to the shaft about which blades rotate. The flow of gas will be in an axial direction at entry and exit. Axial fans are used in Dust collectors to supply fresh air or to suck air from rotary filters and to exhaust air out. These fans are suitable for a larger flow rate with a relatively small pressure gain and in the blasting industry they used Paint Booth.

Typical axial flow fans have the effective progress of the air is straight through the impeller and the distance is constant from the axis. Mainly blade force on the air is directed axially from the inlet to the outlet and then a rise in pressure will arrive and that process will be called direct blade action. Blade force has an additional component in the tangential direction and provides the reaction to the driving torque and due to this air sets its spinning about the axis independently of its forward motion.

The size and materials of the fan depending upon the purpose and the quantity of air handlers and the capacity range from 100 to 500000 cubic feet per minute.

Axial flow fan theory:

Mainly they work on a principle that the direction of axial flow is parallel to the rotor shaft and the blades of the fan forces air linearly to the shaft. They are used to create a high flow rate and capacity to achieve a bigger volume of airflow. They create air movement of lower pressure and usually they require lower power input for any operation.

Axial flow fans are mainly used for low air resistance and high flow usage conditions. The variation depends on its usage. Blades inside the axial flow can be curved, straight, or backward curved. Backward curved blades give greater efficiency as compare to the forward-curved blade but the forward ones are better at self-cleaning.

Axial flow fan features:

  • The axial impeller is the main distinguishing component of the axial fan with the number of blades ranging from 2 to 20. They depend on the design and performance requirements. The axial fan is connected to a powerful drive motor and the motors are assembled in a housing designed for a parallel flow of air through the fan.
  • Axial fans are highly energy-efficient and they can generate greater air movement with less consumption of energy. Axial fans are cost-saving and as compare to other types of fans, they can offer up to 40% savings on power.

Axial Flow Fan Calculations:

There are few technical features used in the selection of the fans to use in your premises such as:

  • Operating points must be away from stall condition and allowance should be created by leaving a 2-degree pitch safety angle so the drive motor is safe from getting overloaded.
  • Motor horsepower should be enough to handle the air pressure and power losses.
  • The mechanical limit should never exceed otherwise we have to add few more blades inside the fan.
  • Noise level should be low and vibration frequency consideration is also necessary.

Axial fan flow directions:

  • Density and weight per unit volume of Axial Fan.
  • Fans blade number or the ratio of the sum of blade widths to the fan’s circumference.
  • Blade shape: straight, curved, or backward in orientation so that airflow rate should be maximum and the twist in shape twists the air and affects the velocity of air.

Application in industries:

  • Field erected cooling towers
  • Package cooling towers
  • Air-cooled condenser
  • Forced ventilation system
